PROGRAM NOTES
In Boundless I try to reflect the sensation of boundlessness and freedom I feel watching the steel blue, sometimes almost black North sea rising and falling, with nothing but more sea on the horizon. Sometimes it feels so vast that it is unsettling, but most often it feels comforting to have that open space before you. It lets the mind wander, and for a nostalgic, there is no better place to reminisce. Boundless is meant to sound like a melody carried on the wind above the water, and it is inspired by the folk music from the North west of Norway.

I live in a region of Norway with tall mountains, lots of forests and the Atlantic Ocean roaring a stone's throw away from my house. Much of the landscape around me has probably felt, looked, and sounded much the same for thousands of years. Major changes happen too slowly for us to perceive, so to us it feels timeless. Being in nature can feel like slowing down time... Timeless is my attempt at capturing this feeling of being "outside time."

Kari Telstad Sundet is a composer from Averøy, currently living in Kristiansund, Norway.

Kari primarily writes electronic music and chamber music, focusing especially on combining the two. Her music is often described as having a visual character, and as being distinctly recognizable for its unique feel and style.

Jacob’s Triptych featured on New Sounds

with host John Schaefer:

ALBUM NOTES, from JacobTV

LIPSTICK (1998) for amplified flute/alto flute and audio with video ad lib. was written for Eleonore Pameijer in 1998. In movement 1 and 3, the speech grooves are based on ready-made sound bites from American talk shows: Conversations about human relationships. A relation therapist with a heavy French accent says: ‘You are jumping all those hoops’. The 2nd movement is based on an interview with Billie Holiday, in which she quotes from her song ‘Don’t explain’, about a woman deceived by her lover: ‘Skip that lipstick - And I know you cheat - And what love endures ‘

PALE MOON IN A VERY BLUE SKY (2020) is a raga, composed in the early spring of 2020, during the Covid 19 pandemic. During an early morning run, I was surprised and touched by a pale full moon in a clear blue sky, unspoilt by the usual chemtrails. The raga was meant for an imaginary instrument and Laura is the first to explore and record the flute version of Pale Moon, so it is dedicated to her.

LOUDLY & CLEARLY (2022) is based on speech grooves from American politicians and news anchors, recorded during the 2008 elections. The piece remained unfinished for many years, and I didn’t know what to do with it, until Laura told me, it could very well become an interesting flute piece, which appeared to be true in 2022, when I finished the score for her! And so it is dedicated to Laura.

All works are published by JacobTV Publishing.

About JacobTV
From the Dutch newspaper NRC:  ‘Dutch ‘avant pop’ composer Jacob Ter Veldhuis, aka JacobTV (1951) started as a rock musician and studied classical composition and electronic music in Groningen. He received the Composition Prize of the Netherlands in 1980 and became a full time composer, who soon made a name for himself with melodious compositions, straight from the heart and with great effect.

The press has called him the ‘Jeff Koons of new music’ and his ‘coming-out’ as a composer of ultra-tonalmusic reached a climax with the video oratorio Paradiso after Dante. Internationally,  they call him JacobTV. Sounds cool, just like his music, packed with slick sounds and  quirky news samples. "I pepper my music with sugar," he says. Some of his pieces are so intense, that people got freaked out by it. Or simply blown away. JacobTV is considered an ‘outlaw’ in new music, whose work ‘makes many a hip-hop artist look sedate’ (Wall Street Journal). His so-called Boombox repertoire, for live instruments with a grooving sound track based on speech melody, became internationally popular. With around 1000 world wide performances a year, JacobTV is one of the most performed European composers.’ www.jacobtv.net

“I am moved and amazed. Lipstick is riveting and rhapsodically joyful...each piece on this recording…would grab the ears and imagination of the traditional classical music audience, an audience who is open and eager to discover something new.”
