FRAZIER FLUTE AND PIANO COMMISSIONING CONSORTIUM, 2025-26
TWO New Works for Flute and Piano, by Michael Frazier

LEAD COMMISSIONER
Laura Lentz, flutist

INSTRUMENTATION
Flute and Piano

CONCEPT BEHIND THE NEW WORK
From Michael Frazier:
“The pair of pieces that will be composed can be performed together as two cohesive movements or completely separately, if desired. These works would navigate two separate musical spaces that reflect recent interests of mine and directions my music has been going in:

1) The first work will be a 10-minute sonic landscape that is patient, harmonically-lush, and deeply communicative between the flute and piano. Much like the overall aesthetics found in my piece for two flutes and piano, jacarandas, these slower, introspective approaches have been with me for a long time, and I find myself always returning to them with a fresh perspective and enthusiasm.

2) The second work will be an 8-minute musical space that is full of energy, rhythm, and groove; I’ve been tapping into my Latino heritage much more as of late, and recent works of mine have navigated this development. I’ve very much enjoyed discovering the ways that my musical language can expand thanks to my newfound love of driving rhythm and vibrant activity, which has evolved in conjunction with my colorful harmonic sensibilities.”
